Wallace did not agree that it was the important factor that Darwin asserted it was. Thank you!. And, in probably the worst passage that I’ve ever read by Darwin, he favourably quotes another writer’s dreadful racist stereotype of the Irish.

On the other hand, Darwin was always a strong opponent of slavery, and he rightly argued that all humans, whatever their “race”, belonged to a single species and were descended from a single common ancestor. I loved the book.. It begins with Francis at age 40, on the death of his brother.

The title comes from the quote that one's ascent in life is like a winding stair, taking one step at a time.

Easy to read, and fills in the gaps of Francis Bacon's life. The book has many photos and goes into much detail about all the aspects of the wedding and the events leading up to it. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a well written biography of Sir Francis, his rise and fall.. One problem is
